People like “Amsterdam has organized crime?”

And like, the basis of Amsterdam’s reason to exist is

• a fuck-huge port
• the sex trade
• the drugs trade
• (targeted to inhabitants of nearby larger polities)

It would be downright bizarre if it didn’t have an extensive organized-crime underworld

Like, think of the reputation of regional port cities. Liverpool? Rotterdam? Guy Ritchie movies? Christiana, in Copenhagen?

The marijuana coffeehouses and red-light district are a way to bring that stuff under color of law so it doesn’t fund crime, like how American state lotteries were a way to undercut popular local “numbers games” that were organized crime’s nose under the door
