Thinking about how I learned to appreciate from Ghost World that costume tailors are very aware of how they make your tits look
This scene is one of those great adaptational changes - Comic!Scott is probably hot enough, and not bad with women, but he is awkward with Ramona due to dreamscape travel ~plot reasons, not base inability:
So you know, these characters are equally in each others’ leagues, which the art of the scene reflects (except Ramona’s shoes, which are objectively awesome).
But in the movie adaptation we cast Michael Cera, King of Geeks, as Scott Pilgrim, for ~reasons (Knives Chau. The reason is Knives). As such we need to rework Scott’s character from brutishly charming to awkward-but-endearing, with his fighting prowess being a plot twist over a logical extension of his vibe. We only got a few scenes to make sure we sell that, so lets twist around this scene to instead be a Knives/Ramona contrast reaction scene crux’d on the Pac/Puck pick-up play - dialogue fully absent from the original comic. Formally awkward-endearing Scott must be shown to be out of his league to drive his interest.
And beyond dialogue we will emphasize that with visual language. Despite their outfits being mirror versions of each others in color (Ramona’s patch < - > Scott’s undershirt) to emphasize their connection, Ramona has to be the hotter one. Brighter colors, sure. But tightening that top button around the tits certainly won’t hurt.
