Concerned my “make the house engage more with the back yard with rear sliding doors and a deck (and a hot tub?)” and “finish the basement as a 1br apartment with its own entrance” long-term renovation dreams might be in some conflict

Honestly at worst I think it might be “I have to fence out the far corner of my yard I notice least for the basement to use as a flower bed and escape route”

Also I have these stone retaining walls I need to replace, they’re bulging out or collapsing after I pulled the ferns that were wedging them apart

For a while I was thinking it would be cool to be fortification rock like at the base of Japanese “shiro” castles

Then I actually saw a retaining wall built with modern fortification techniques, mass rock scrap poured into wire cages to form blocks

Now whenever I picture it the new wall’s poured concrete but beveled, if practical dyed a darker grey, and maybe enhanced with vertical elements every 6 feet or so

(The modern Japanese approach)

Also Portland is absurdly verdant and the lawn and overhanging trees create a ton of debris and thus new dirt every year and it’s now like half a foot higher by the foundation then where it tumbles off the ledge, I might have to raise the wall higher to buy it a few decades of utility

There is like a ‘60s-ass stone walkway in the backyard I didn’t know until I literally unearthed it several years into living here, I basically have to dig it back up every other year
