We all know The Village People’s classic YMCA, but seriously, in

  • the 70s,
  • the gym

had a

  • men’s dorm

with

  • shared bathrooms and showers

to make things easy for

  • young men from nowhere moving to the big city

How gay must that have been?

A related thought: how many young men moved into the dorms unknowingly and were just like “huh, so that’s what it’s like for adults in the big city, lots of gay hookups”

I’m sorry are we doing “the Village People are gay” now?

I thought this was going to be about how US cities used to have an easily findable network of cheap, no frills, no strings attached, no questions asked housing and how that contributed to social and geographic mobility as well as independence on the part of young men. But gay hookups are also good, sure.
