when i was in 10th grade i started a video game club and one of the teachers heard about it and was like “oh my husband would LOVE to come in and have a chat with you guys.” so we were like alright yeah send him in.

her husband was one of the people who made Moonbase Alpha and he took about an hour to explain to us all that under no circumstances should we ever work in the video game industry, complete with horror stories and examples of the insane bug testing strategies most developers do where you do one specific action (like opening and closing a drawer) literally all day. it was basically an episode of Scared Straight but for plucky young dorks who wanted to work at Epic Games or something.

and for what it’s worth, it worked. from that day onward i never even considered a career in video game development. the same is probably true of everyone else who was in that room with me

yeah my contact who gave me manual contracts at THQ started out as a tester on that year’s WWE game, just going through every character combination and confirming you could Standing Short Punch 4 them from the left, from the right, etc.
