I think a big part of this is that Figueroa, the big north-south route through it, with the 110 paralleling it, was annexed to LA as a narrow panhandle down to the port at San Pedro, and in LA’s council fiefdom system it was never particularly important to anyone, so the part more Anglo Angelinos are likely to draw their impressions of is this incongruously shitty strip even as like, Inglewood and Compton reminded me of the '70s “pot where the white ethnics melted into white” neighborhoods I grew up seeing after the fact
