are these flares?

I guess my main aesthetic connection with flares was the C-130 “angel flares”

and my main helicopter connection with them was as a plot device on the ‘80s show “Airwolf”

(which I guess was part of the '80s theme that Americans built a lot of expertise and meaning around helicopters in Vietnam and it seeped out into the culture in weird ways)
