Alex Vitale casually dropping the fact that Southern police departments switched to larger caliber guns because they thought cocaine made black people invincible

Ok, but can we fact-check this before laughing at it? Like, cocaine is a stimulant, it does Things to your brain. Otherwise nobody would take it. So, is it Actually True that people on cocaine are as susceptible to being stopped by a bullet, as those off it? Is there, like, Actual Evidence one way or another, as opposed to virtue signalling by sneering at the stupid racists? Militaries have been experimenting with drugs since forever, you’d think there would be some data somewhere.

Gonna second this.  It’s actually quite plausible that a drug could desensitize someone to pain temporarily, and thus, while not reducing the amount of damage they take from bullets, make them less likely to stop as a result of the pain of getting hit by bullets.

The US Army switched from .38 to .45 in the early 1900s over concerns re: putting down Muslim suicide attackers in the Philippines, when .40 S&W was developed it was pitched to urban police forces in the early 1990s as better able to stop cocaine or PCP-fueled attackers than 9mm or earlier revolver calibers

“Is this enough gun to stop a frenzied brown man?” is a pretty well-precedented concern for US state forces re: handguns

Also like for nonracial nutrition reasons humans are just more massive now than they were in 1903, better able to absorb hits and recoil, discount for that
