People got mad at me when I said that “half the feminist movement since its inception” was based in sexual repression, calling that a ridiculous exaggeration. And it was my mistake for not making it clear that I was talking about the temperance movement–which was almost completely coterminous with the feminist movement for the first century or so of the latter’s existence, and was certainly the numerically-largest and most politically-influential any wave of feminism has ever been in American history.
