if we don’t learn from history we are doomed to… ah

there’s a tricky philosophical argument there about whether it’s worse to repeat the exact same crime or commit a new but almost identical crime; for example if you had an accurate simulation of a human brain and you subjected it to an unpleasant experience, would it be twice as bad if you reset the simulation to the initial conditions and ran it again? or does following the exact same path through state space have the same moral weight regardless of how many times you do it?

I wrote up like half a story about this based off William Gibson and Libby Hoeler in early-2000s college but I realized I was just repeating David Foster Wallace’s Soft Date
