it was the kind of dry, transportable staple consumable perfectly suited to the replacement of home and local artisan production by industrial mass manufacture
Like, what stackable, transportable object were you more likely to find a properly sized box of than soap? Other common goods came in barrels, kegs, bales, cans, sacks. I guess in rural areas a fruit crate.
