The movement was decried by \u201csciences\u201d and pseudo-skeptics alike.</p><p>Apparently, \u201cdebunking\u201d was not only actively bad, but also actively dangerous \u2013 the movement was on record saying that it was capable of eradicating a particular civilization. \u00a0The people in this movement had a confusing number of fears and phobias about their targets, some of which were similarly ridiculous:</p><p>- they feared everyone who wasn\u2019t a fan of their favorite\u00a0\u201cproven\u201d scholars, or who was actively hostile towards them in general</p><p>- they feared everyone who would \u201cout\u201d them, or who was willing to spread a rumor about them to protect a friend\u2019s status</p><p>- they feared everyone who would tell the public\u00a0\u201cthe \u2018wrong\u2019 truth\u201d</p><p>- they feared everyone who would criticize their favorite scholars in a\u00a0\u201chypothetical, theoretical, hypothetical postmodern setting\u201d</p><p>- they feared everyone who was friendly towards them or claimed to be friendly towards them, as it implied they were right</p><p>- they feared anyone who got close to the \u201creal\u201d scholars</p><p>So their answer was basically\u00a0\u201cdon\u2019t do science, just learn to deny you\u2019re an expert in anything, and never learn to \u2018debunk\u2019 yourself.\u201d</p><p>Now, a lot of these fears are old, but I can\u2019t find it in the internet archives. \u00a0I suspect there were more of them at some point, but I don\u2019t remember it. \u00a0Here are a few that I\u2019ve noticed, though:</p><p>- the \u201canti-intellectual\u201d attack: \u201ctoo much education is bad,\u201d \u201cintelligence has always been a matter of luck,\u201d \u201ctoo many intellectuals are friendly to organized religion,\u201d \u201cdo your own research, you know more than we do,\u201d \u201cyou aren\u2019t an expert, the experts are talking past you,\u201d \u201cexperts\u201d mean\u00a0\u201cthe experts\u201d, when in fact they mean\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m smart,\u201d and I\u2019m not in contact with any of the experts</p><p>- the fear of being seen as too\u00a0\u201cPC\u201d: \u201cI am telling the truth,\u201d \u201cidentifying as female is destructive to the female population,\u201d\u00a0\u201cislam is a religion of peace,\u201d \u201cRastafarianism is a legitimate religion,\u201d \u201care gay people better off in prison?\u201d</p><p>- the fear of being seen as too\u00a0\u201coverly confident\u201d:\u00a0\u201cI am the only person who sees it,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am in touch with reality,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am humble, just like my target,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am full of enthusiasm for my target\u201d</p><p>- the fear of being seen as too\u00a0\u201cauthoritative\u201d:\u00a0\u201cwho is this authority claiming I am over?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cwho is this authority giving me their opinion about?\u201d\u00a0 \u201chow can I make this person pay for these opinions?\u201d</p><p>- the fear of being seen as too\u00a0\u201chierarchical\u201d:\u00a0\u201cI am the only person who can know,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am the only person who has authority over,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am the only person who can provide\u00a0\u2018consensus\u2019,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m the expert,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am the expert,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI am the expert\u201d</p><p>- the fear of being seen as too\u00a0\u201caspirational\u201d:\u00a0\u201cI can change the world,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI can shape history,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI can help make the world a better place,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI can help build a better future,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI can create a better future,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI can influence the future,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m an aspie,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to have a big impact,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to do something major,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to save the world,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m more evolved than you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m smarter than you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m the <i>only</i>\u00a0one who knows,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m smarter than you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m smarter than you,\u201d\u00a0\u201cyou\u2019re stupid,\u201d\u00a0\u201cyou\u2019re retarded,\u201d</p></blockquote>\n\n\n<p>That does sound like the teachers I encountered at my university, I\u2019ll give you that </p></blockquote>\n\n<p>This is exactly what motivated me to look into the idea of\u00a0\u201coverconfidence\u201d and\u00a0\u201carrogance\u201d in the first place \u2013 I feel like I have a lot of mental differences from other people, in particular that there are a lot of things I can\u2019t figure out even though I see them all the time.
