I\u2019m not sure if the reason I feel unsettled about the American Dream is that it seems too dark, or that it seems too ominous, or that it seems too \u201cforward\u201d. \u00a0Either that. \u00a0I\u2019ve had bad and good nights. \u00a0I don\u2019t feel quite that certain anymore, but I feel unsettled. \u00a0And I want to believe that I can do something better, that I can make this work. \u00a0I want to believe that I\u2019m better than what I\u2019m feeling. \u00a0I want to believe that I\u2019m not\u00a0the sort of guy I used to be.

I\u2019m stuck in a house that\u2019s on fire. \u00a0I don\u2019t know how long it\u2019ll last. \u00a0I\u2019m tired and I\u2019m hungry and I\u2019m cold. \u00a0I can barely see anything. \u00a0The fire is coming out of the vents. \u00a0The girl who lived here with me is dead. \u00a0Her name was Mary. \u00a0I don\u2019t know why I\u2019m alive. \u00a0I\u2019m going to die. \u00a0I\u2019m going to die. \u00a0I\u2019m going to die. \u00a0Stop the fire! \u00a0I can\u2019t do it. \u00a0I can\u2019t stop it. \u00a0I can\u2019t stop it. \u00a0I can\u2019t stop it. \u00a0It\u2019s coming out of the vents. \u00a0I can\u2019t stop it.

Thanks. \u00a0I keep having this experience where when I see things that I should be able to understand, but are not quite right in some way, I instead become convinced that they are wrong and that I\u2019m in a bad place in which to live.

Hearing the Dream is about the horrible things you\u2019re capable of doing to someone when you treat them badly. \u00a0The Nightmare is that you can\u2019t even notice the difference. \u00a0The Dream is a good story that you want to live in because it sounds good and you want to live in it because you\u2019re not very good at reading people. \u00a0The Nightmare is very bad at not noticing the difference.
