I don’t think mobs of arsonist looters are going to tear through – the Portland protests 70 blocks and a river away if anything are being diluted with non-militant novelty-seeking casuals. I don’t think antifa’s gonna beat me up cause they don’t like my posts, though I keep my eye on the narrow chance that will be an issue someday.
The fact that it’s been hit repeatedly before including 3 vehicle thefts indicates this house is in fact a place criminals target! This block had more bars on the windows when I moved in just a few years ago! If police are pinned down for long or abolished I do in fact expect it to see more predation!
Like, my use case of “2-5 pushy people try to force their way in” is in fact an actual thing that occurs! A plausible threat of deadly force does a lot to check its possibility, and especially if you’re going to intentionally try to weaken police as a threat of deadly force I can draw on, I want the ability to generate my own at home!
Like, I’m exactly who you would expect to take this angle! I’m a straight-enough white lawyer’s son late 30s homeowner with property crime on the mind! And if people burst into my house when I’m there I want them to get shot! I know this isn’t universally understood as a human right - the UK enforces much different consensus!
But I want that plausible threat and that’s why I have a shotgun! And if history is any guide, there’ll be enough similar demand that there’ll arise nonstate collective enterprises to provide it, which will then jockey to coopt and become the state! (Snow Crash was substantially about this dynamic playing out in the gated developments of 1990 SoCal)
And if by whatever motte-and-bailey “police abolitionism” means we still have police, I don’t know the leftists behind it would put that high a priority on protecting my single-family homestead.
Not that police are more than a lost-and-found service as is. Part of getting 3 vehicles stolen is we’ve been in a vehicle theft boom largely cause an Oregon court made it radically harder to establish a methhead driving a stolen car with a screwdriver in the ignition knew it was stolen, and not innocently borrowed from a drifter acquaintance they can’t locate.
And that wasn’t patched until recently and honestly, even if an over-concern with criminal defendants and low priority on resolving property crime waves led to my stuff repeatedly getting taken I can accept and even endorse that as the price of Oregon. But I do have limits there. So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal (…in the European sense?) but past that suck my left one.
