I remember a year or two ago a memoir was being passed around by some white ethnic guy about living through the desegregation of Philly. Started with a line like “when I tell people I grew up in West Philadelphia they’re like ‘wooah, that musta been rough’ and I tell them 'it was the best possible place to be a kid, until it was the worst’”.
