It’s cool that the window of music we’re officially supposed to hate has passed through the mid-90s, and how after that passes you can appreciate even the stuff people hated at the time. Hall & Oates are hip and I can even appreciate Mariah Carey now, though I still think she ruined melisma for a generation.
I was thinking about this because I was wondering just how much of New Found Glory’s success came from their covers laundering the ‘80s for us right when we were on the cusp of being ready. Except they do the punk-vocals thing in a way that’s got the snot without the sneers, and who wants to hear these overblown romantic power ballads that were ridiculous enough covered to sound like they’re coming from 14-year old boys and… oh. 14 year old boys. Fair enough.
Ooooh crap, we’re due to rehabilitate nu-metal soon, aren’t we. Fuck fuck fuck.
