I never really got his character before but that makes perfect sense.

That explains how he became the leader, that explains why he alternates between being such an arrogant prick and such a needy bitch, that explains why the only people he can feel comfortable with and defer to (and, in turn, the ones that are most drawn to him) are literal mind-reading empaths.

He’s got a power in his head that he keeps bound so he doesn’t hurt the people around him
