\n\n\nI first encountered these unusual Ws way back in the 90s, but at the time I never paid much thought to them.
\nFor example, in the Super Famicom version of Final Fantasy IV,\n there\u2019s a technique called \u201cW Meteo\u201d. This was translated as \u201cW.Meteo\u201d \nin the English Super NES release\u2026 but back in the day I just always \nassumed it stood for \u201cWhite Meteo\u201d.
\nA few years later I encountered something similar in Final Fantasy VII \u2013 a special skill called \u201cW-Item\u201d that lets you use two items in one turn:
\nI\u2019ll admit that with this FFVII \u201cW\u201d I was a little more confused, but\n I just figured it probably had a good reason for being called that.
\nAnd it does, I later learned after studying Japanese for a while! Just as Mighty Kombat surmises, the prononuciation for \u201cW\u201d is often abbreviated down to just the \u201cdouble\u201d part in Japanese, and as a side effect it often gets used to refer to things that are doubled. So the \u201cW.Meteo\u201d wasn\u2019t\n a white-spell Meteo like I first thought (although that would\u2019ve been \ncool); it instead just meant it was a \u201cdouble Meteo\u201d spell. And \u201cW-Item\u201d\n meaning \u201cdouble item\u201d makes perfect sense.
\nThis is so sensible we should adopt it in English. They even have W burgers in Japan!
