It’s questionable to cite postwar housewives as the American precedent for UBI and not, say, either the prewar wealthy “leisure class” that spent its time on literature and gala parties and amateur sports, or the “welfare class” that was resented for living in idleness on the public dime until 90s reforms. But it’s interesting to think about.
