Yeah honestly I have no idea where that came from.

The US has bought territory before, the Louisiana Purchase, the Alaska Purchase, the Gadsden and Florida Purchases. It’s even bought territory specifically from Denmark before - that’s the US Virgin Islands.

The Alaska Purchase was ridiculed as “Seward’s Folly” but it ultimately paid off Yukon Gold Rush, Prudhoe Bay oil field, and geostrategic effects; grabbing for underexplored Arctic territory in the face of global warming and renewed Russian rivalry (in the Cold War, Greenland and Iceland were significantly run as American military outposts, all those Øs in Tom Clancy books) is not obviously the worst idea.

Still, I have no idea where that came from.
