This is probably the most insulting thing I’ve seen in a really long time.

what the fuck??????

I planned on going to the UofM after high school so I’ve looked at it’s tuition fees, and it’s DEFINITELY something I will not be able to afford without any type of loans. After seeing this and researching a bit more I might reconsider my choice of college. Why? Because this is straight up unfair. Why are they allowed to go back to college and earn credits for a small price of $10 while younger students taking the SAME COURSE have to pay full tuition?? I don’t want this type of shit to be seen as some “senior discount” because to me, senior discounts for restaurants or whatever else entertainment is fine. But this is an education matter, and there should be no type of “discounts” or decrease in price for anyone because of their age. Especially since baby boomers are usually more well off than we are. These boomers want to go back to college but don’t want to spend money to pay for full tuition? Too fucking bad. Either apply for scholarships or pay full price like everyone else.

What a horrible, subzero take. Don’t know where you got the idea that most boomers are better off than your generation; this is decidedly not the case. And the boomer aged people who would be going back to school aren’t the ones who are making 100k a year; it’s going to be the people who don’t see retirement as a possibility despite being well into their 60s, who never got a chance at higher education, who are working customer service jobs for minimum wage on their arthritic feet 40 hours a week. My dad has worked at white castle for 30 years; mum is a bus driver. I am so glad they live in the Twin Cities and I hope they take advantage of this.

Your reaction shouldn’t be “they shouldn’t get to have this!”, it should be “EVERYONE should get to have this”. You’re gonna be 65 some day too, you should be trying to build a world where the inability to afford higher education is a thing of the past, not trying to make it a life sentence.

While this graph doesn’t break it down, the 18-24 demographic has about about 20% of the median net worth of the 30-34 demographic, so the wealth disparity here is worse than the graph implies.

Also…

I hate to be that guy, but college is really expensive.  And for 65-year-olds, it’s pure consumption.   For 22-year-olds, it might be a very long-term investment with a questionable payoff.

That’s why we subsidize state colleges, and that’s implicitly why on certain levels, my advice is to go take the debt if it massively increases income.  That’s literally what investments are for.

“Free college classes for seniors” is a loss-leader for University-Based Retirement Communities (UBRCs) and the general concentration of the elderly in college towns where university-affiliated hospital systems can provide them remunerative medical care
