That was why the “yuppie” was such a hate figure in the ‘80s - working your way up the system had been tabooed but they were bringing it back

The evangelical explosion being largely a story about the rise of a new white middle class out of the rural working class

Into the ‘90s with the “bourgeois bohemian” – even the hip types who had sneered at the yuppies were doing it

All the way putting more emphasis on college - the credentialing institution of the officer class, on prim, upright values…

But the thing was it paid off, for a while. If you cultivated a professional attitude and a professional education you’d get a professional job and a professional life, right?

Right?

People have realized that’s no longer true and they’re recalibrating.
