Of course the genre name was traditionally “Country and Western”, “Country” largely meaning “Southern”, and I think a lot of the upbeat country since the ‘90s was really a reflection of the rise of the New South and the development of a native (white) middle class, NASCAR and evangelicalism and all that
But historically the western frontier was really not even postracial but pre-racial, torn by a lot of more immediately relevant cross-cutting commitments and united on a major man v. nature axis, and America looking back to that historical memory to orient itself today is probably a good thing
