actually if we’re talking about how American culture narrated its backlash from the 70s through the 80s and 90s, the Escape From series is pretty interesting:
the ‘80s lawless New York-as-prison is clearly a reflection of what New York was at the time, the '90s LA is a fantasy of when the hard rain gets around to cleansing it, when all the whores and surfers and streetballers and Hollywood whores and hustlers get theirs
