I mean, you can definitely tell the difference from someone who inhabits the mentality of their characters in writing dialogue and characterization as vs. someone who moves them through paces to achieve some calculated effect

(And that’s not to say the first will necessarily be better – when people complain that characters just trade witty dialogue that’s just the writer’s voice, well, at least the dialogue’s witty, and going too strong on the characterization can leave you high school English class romances where nothing happens and the characters just have feelings about it for 300 pages)
