That’s the wicker man. It was a druidic ritual practiced in Gaul by the celts in what is now northern France. They would build a giant wicker man and fill it with a quota for human sacrifice and burn the whole thing to the ground, live folks and all. The quota was usually met with criminals, but if there were not enough criminals to meet the quota innocents were burned. Julius Caesar noted the practice in his Commentaries on the Gallic War.
