While I am sympathetic to the liberal position of each these issues in isolation, this sort of argument is really dishonest unless there are other tweets showing that this specific person refuses to use preferred pronouns.

People on the other side are as complicated as people on this side; you don’t get to use them interchangeably and pretend they’re all exactly the same on every issue.

And the two examples are bad for different reasons.

Intentional pronoun misuse is bad because its going out of your way to intentionally insult people/preformative political signaling.Ā

The assault rifle thing is bad because it indicates that the speaker has ignorance of knowledge that is critical to giving a coherent, well informed opinion on the matter. It’s like the people who don’t understand the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit and who babble incoherently aboutĀ ā€œwriteoffsā€ – it indicates a fundamental lack of knowledge that makes what they have to say on the matter non-credible even if you can parse what they are trying to say.

The other reason that the second example is bad is that, uh….

… both the NRA and the US Army believe that assault rifles are real things that actually exist, so if Bethany S. Mandel has discovered otherwise, I hope she will drop them a line and let them know.

I think ā€˜assault weapon’ is the one that isn’t a real thing? But yeah assault rifles are real.

I mean ā€œassault rifleā€ was a term derived from 1944’s Sturmgewehr (ā€œassault rifleā€) 44, for a battle rifle shooting more smaller bullets to medium-not-long range

ā€œAssault weaponā€ really broke through around the passage of the 1994 American federal ā€œPublic Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Actā€ to mean ā€œpowerful personal weapon suited to use against humans we haven’t yet mythologized as part of our rustic traditionsā€, including non-rifles like the ā€œStreet Sweeperā€ shotgun

(Joke’s on them, ā€œblack rifleā€ ARs were already getting mythologized as part of rustic traditions and there was hella backlash)

To address OP the reason they see no contradiction is because both refusing your pronouns and correcting your gun terms are understood as countering your liberal idiot error lest it undermine the proper order of society
