I mean while it’s easy to say that Altered Carbon is just shamelessly rehashing ‘80s cyberpunk aesthetic with wilful abandon, is there anything wrong with that? Not everyone was alive during the ‘80s! They still deserve to see blackclad samurai ninjas with flechette guns jumpkicking in the neon-lit VR rain.

If only there were some way to watch media from the 80s today !

sadly all the VHS machines were destroyed during the Digital Uprising; truly we live in a post-apocalyptic world.

Do we have that much visual media from the 1980s that actually depict what the 1980s thought the cyberpunk future would be like though? Sure we had all the written media but as far as movies and TV goes I thought it was a common complaint amoung sci fi fans that we didn’t.

We had Blade Runner then…what, War Games? Tron? It took us until 1995 to get Johnny Mnemonic.

Akira?

Judge Dredd?
