Churches as nonprofits is like Amerindian tribes as sovereignties, the concept is their authority predates the state

(before the New Deal, old age/orphan/widows\u2019 care was on counties [on \u201cAlmshouse Road\u201d in my hometown colonial county] because they were the secular successor to parishes)
