I’m thinking because control of petroleum and petroleum derivatives in the wake of the synthetics revolution more or less tracked with the control of natural fibers that came previous: the British had the Indian Ocean sources and (with France) the Near East and Africa; the US had a continent’s worth of domestic supply; the Dutch randomly had the Asian archipelagos; Germany had advanced processing capacity but no secure sources
