A lot of folks seem to be a little lost when first setting \nfoot into the goth subculture and don\u2019t know where to go for band \nrecommendations. Here\u2019s a list of important, influential bands that \ncontributed to the goth subculture - along with several favs - I put \ntogether with Dean (angry punk pictured above) and the help of you lovely Fab Bats.</p>\n<p>In\n order to avoid classification issues, they\u2019re categorized by sound \nrather than specific genre. So, here we go:</p>\n<p><b>Sounds dead or undead</b>:</p>\n<ul><li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Bauhaus\" target=\"_blank\">Bauhaus</a></b>\u00a0(1978-2008) \u201cBela Lugosi\u2019s Dead\u201d is a national anthem. Lead singer Peter Murphy has really pointy cheek bones.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Peter+Murphy?ac=peter%20murphy\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Murphy</a></b> (1983-present) his solo work, not as angular as his facial features.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Love+And+Rockets\" target=\"_blank\">Love and Rockets</a></b> (1985-present) Peter Murphy got stuck hanging upside \u00a0down on stage and the Bauhaus members formed a band without him.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Joy+Division\" target=\"_blank\">Joy Division</a></b>\u00a0(1976-1980)\n Ian Curtis was an energetic dancer, to say the least. \u201cLove Will Tear \nUs Apart\u201d and \u201cTransmission\u201d are famous songs.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Sisters+of+Mercy\" target=\"_blank\">The Sisters of Mercy</a></b>\u00a0(1980-present) Andrew Eldritch is not goth, he swears.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Cure\" target=\"_blank\"><b>The Cure</b></a>\u00a0(1976-present) lead singer Robert Smith is a giant cat with red lipstick. He cries on stage and his tears cure cancer.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Cocteau+Twins\" target=\"_blank\">Cocteau Twins</a></b>\u00a0(1979-1997)</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Sex+Gang+Children?ac=sex%20ga\" target=\"_blank\">Sex Gang Children</a></b>\u00a0(1991-present)</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Wire\" target=\"_blank\">Wire</a>\u00a0</b>(1976-1980) seriously underrated. Would recommend the album \u201cPink Flag\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Lydia+Lunch\" target=\"_blank\">Lydia Lunch</a>\u00a0</b>amazing female singer. Try the album \u201c13.13\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Clan+of+Xymox\" target=\"_blank\">Clan of Xymox</a>\u00a0</b>(1983-present) are you kidding no one\u2019s voice is this deep.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Chameleons?ac=the%20chameleons\" target=\"_blank\"><b>The Chameleons\u00a0</b></a>(1981-2003) has the ability to sound woeful yet jolly.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Mission\" target=\"_blank\">The Mission</a>\u00a0</b>(1986-present) \u201cInto the Blue\u201d is a good start.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Depeche+Mode?ac=depeche\" target=\"_blank\">Depeche Mode</a>\u00a0</b>(1980-present)\n dark and gloomy synths. Known for \u201cPersonal Jesus\u201d, \u201cEnjoy the \nSilence\u201d, \u201cNever let Me Down Again\u201d and a billion others.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Fields+of+the+Nephilim?ac=fields\" target=\"_blank\">Fields of the Nephilim</a>\u00a0</b>(1984-present) vocalist Carl McCoy is a desert cowboy.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+March+Violets?ac=the%20march%20viol\" target=\"_blank\"><b>The March Violets</b></a>\u00a0(1981-present) listen to \u201cThe Botanic Verses\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Bolshoi\" target=\"_blank\">The Bolshoi</a></b>\u00a0(1983-1988) start with the album \u201cFriends\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Danse+Society?ac=the%20danse%20soci\" target=\"_blank\">The Danse Society</a>\u00a0</b>(1980-present) try the album \u201cHeaven is Waiting\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Southern+Death+Cult\" target=\"_blank\">The Southern Death Cult</a>\u00a0</b>(1981-1983) has a song called \u201cFatman\u201d. Ian Astbury teamed up with Billy Duffy from\u00a0<i>Theatre of Hate</i>\u00a0to create\u00a0<i>Death Cult</i>\u00a0which later became\u00a0<i>The Cult</i>, another band worth checking out.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Play+Dead?ac=play%20dead\" target=\"_blank\">Play Dead</a>\u00a0</b>(1981-1985) doesn\u2019t like being called goth. Musicians that don\u2019t like being labeled? Unheard of.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Corpus+Delicti?ac=corpus%20delic\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus Delicti</a>\u00a0</b>(1993-1998) name means \u201cbody of crime\u201d. Very dark and devoid of Type O\u2019s black \nhumor, but still a great listen.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Cr%C3%BCxshadows\" target=\"_blank\">The Cruxshadows</a></b> (1992-present) an alternative musical start for many. The important thing: spiky hair.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Light+Asylum\" target=\"_blank\">Light Asylum</a> (2010-present)</li>\n</ul><p><b>Deathrockers and undead punks</b>:</p>\n<ul><li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Christian+Death?ac=christian%20death\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Christian Death</b></a>\u00a0(1979-present)\n founded by Rozz Williams, but faced several line up issues (a second \nChristian Death featured Valor Kand rather than Rozz Williams). Known \nfor \u201cRomeo\u2019s Distress\u201d. Start with \u201cOnly Theatre of Pain\u201d then \n\u201cCatastrophe Ballet\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Specimen?ac=specimen\" target=\"_blank\">Specimen</a>\u00a0</b>(1980-present) features the cofounder of the Batcave. Best known for \u201cKiss Kiss Bang Bang\u201d and Johnny Slut being awesome.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Cinema+Strange?ac=cinema%20strange\" target=\"_blank\">Cinema Strange</a>\u00a0</b>(1994-present) listen to the album of the same name. Known for their acts on stage.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Deadfly+Ensemble\" target=\"_blank\">The Deadfly Ensemble</a>\u00a0</b>similar in feel to Cinema Strange with the same \u201cstory telling\u201d aspect.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Catholic+Spit\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Catholic Spit</b></a><br/></li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Voodoo+Church\" target=\"_blank\">Voodoo Church</a></b>\u00a0(1982-present)</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Misfits\" target=\"_blank\">Misfits</a>\u00a0</b>(1977-present)\n 1950s horror told by crazy guys with guitars and muscles. Personal \nfavorite album: \u201cStatic Age\u201d. Singer Glenn Danzig went on to create\u00a0<i>Danzig</i>. Also make your day better by listening to the \u201cMonster Mash\u201d cover.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Cramps?ac=the%20cramps\" target=\"_blank\">The Cramps</a>\u00a0</b>(1976-2009) originators of \u201cpsychobilly\u201d. Highly original and sleazy with class.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Alien+Sex+Fiend\" target=\"_blank\">Alien Sex Fiend</a>\u00a0</b>(1982-present)\n husband and wife that sound like legit extra-terrestrials. Proof that \nthere is no such thing as taking yourself seriously.</li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Damned?ac=the%20damned\" target=\"_blank\"><b>The Damned</b></a>\u00a0(1976-present) lead singer, Dave Vanian, is a vampire.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Blood+And+Roses\" target=\"_blank\">Blood and Roses</a>\u00a0</b>underrated. Listen to \u201cYour Sin is Your Salvation\u201d.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/The+Birthday+Party?ac=the%20birthday%20pa\" target=\"_blank\">The Birthday Party</a>\u00a0</b>(1977-1983) pretty jazzy. And, Siouxsie \nSioux rocks.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Killing+Joke?ac=killing%20joke\" target=\"_blank\">Killing Joke</a>\u00a0\u00a0</b>(1978-present)\u00a0where\n do I begin? Do I begin at all? You know what, it doesn\u2019t matter if you \nskip this entire list and just listen to this one band. I\u2019ll spare you \nthe essay and recommend the album of the same name, \u201cLaugh? I nearly \nbought one!\u201d, \u201cDemocracy\u201d, \u201cExtremities, Dirt and Various Repressed \nEmotions\u201d and \u201cPandemonium\u201d. More than the sound are the lyrics, the \nmembers and the message.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/1919?ac=1919\" target=\"_blank\">1919</a>\u00a0</b>(1980-present) underrated to the extreme. Similar to Killing Joke in sound and vibe.</li>\n<li>\n<b><a href=\"http://www.last.fm/music/Nina+Hagen?ac=nina%20hagen\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Hagen</a>\u00a0</b>(1971-present) she\u2019s wicked cool, in sound and style. Had Type O Negative\u2019s original drummer after \nhe left.
