Amusingly, “American Cowboy” really was a stock Exotic Foreigner character type in a lot of non-American literature back around the 1800s. Heck, there’s even one in Dracula.

The “American cowboy” stock character made an appearance recently in Filinta, a state-funded (and very well-funded) Turkish detective drama set in the Ottoman empire. He is a “strong musketeer” called “The Kid” and once worked as a Pinkerton, which the protagonist helpfully informs us is the American secret police.

Later on, the sultan helpfully explains that he won’t allow the rich guy to make a deal with The Kid because the Yankees shot Lincoln to prevent Reconstruction, so instead the protagonist shoots him, and goes on in the next episodes to defeat the British, the French, and the Catholics.
