Chinese restaurants are now a cultural fixture, as American as cherry \npie. Startlingly, however, there was once a national movement to \neliminate Chinese restaurants, using innovative legal methods to drive \nthem out. Chinese restaurants were objectionable for two reasons. First,\n they threatened white women, who were subject to seduction by Chinese \nmen, through intrinsic female weakness, or employment of nefarious \ntechniques such as opium addiction. In addition, Chinese restaurants \ncompeted with \u201cAmerican\u201d restaurants, thus threatening the livelihoods \nof white owners, cooks and servers; unions were the driving force behind\n the movement.
