abortion is only legal in new zealand if two doctors are consulted and agree that there is a risk of physical or emotional harm caused by the pregnancy.
that said, generally speaking abortion laws are ignored by GPs to my knowledge.
Apparently this is how it works in Britain too? Britain doesn’t technically allow abortion on demand, only in cases of rape or if the continuation of the pregnancy poses risks to the health of the mother or baby, but in practice basically anyone can get an abortion if they ask for one and if push comes to shove they just lie and say the risk was to the mother’s mental health, which can’t really be proven or disproven.
But it’s still the primary destination for women from Ireland seeking abortions.
not good enough I reckon; we need the law to guarantee access.
this is a big part of why American anti-abortionists resist “health/life of the mother” - as attested by medical professionals - exemptions to abortion bans. In countries they’ve been implemented where they don’t have professional buy-in, they’ve checked boxes “oh, she threatened to commit suicide otherwise”
same as trans mainstreaming, “you have to or else the kiddos will go Young Werther”, forgot what Thatcher knew at The Maze – Blazing Saddles was a farce, you can’t hold yourself hostage
