They get to make a show of being progressive and they also get to reap the benefits of a system they\u2019re supposedly fighting against.\u201d</p></blockquote><p>Here\u2019s a thought: a year ago, circa Gamergate, I <a href=\"/post/102580056373/\" target=\"_blank\">predicted that</a> while Gawker wouldn\u2019t apologize they would quietly back off the culture war stuff now that they were taking lumps for it, <a href=\"/post/101021694634/\" target=\"_blank\">and said</a> Pareene would be a better custodian of the brand voice.</p><p>So reading this I discover they installed Pareene last month, and then this:</p><blockquote><p>In January, a black senior editor at Gawker.com, Jason Parham, wrote a post on his personal blog called <a href=\"http://jparham.kinja.com/gawker-medias-responsibility-to-diversity-1678986146\" target=\"_blank\">Gawker Media\u2019s Responsibility to Diversity,</a>\n one that later inspired Cook\u2019s release of Gawker\u2019s diversity \nstatistics. He was concerned in part by the creation of a new executive \neditorial team\u200a\u2014\u200acheekily called the Politburo, and featuring five male \neditors and two women editors\u200a\u2014\u200areflected a waning interest in editorial\n diversity. Nick Denton responded in <a href=\"http://jparham.kinja.com/hey-jason-thanks-for-your-note-and-agreeing-to-air-1679667701\" target=\"_blank\">a comment on Parham\u2019s post with this</a>:</p><blockquote><div>\u201cLet\u2019s\n welcome, if not out-and-out racists, then at least the wide array of \npeople with whom a conversation is possible: national greatness \nconservatives, Burkean Tories and business pragmatists, for instance; \nChristians and other spiritual people; economic liberals, libertarians \nand techno-utopians; and black and other social conservatives.\u201d</div></blockquote><p>Instead\n of focusing on a simple request, one familiar to any self-aware media \ncompany in 2015\u200a\u2014\u200aa commitment to \u201cpublishing and hiring more Latina \nvoices, queer voices, black voices, and marginalized voices across its \ncore sites\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aDenton waved his hand and advocated for more or less the \nopposite.</p></blockquote><p>So, was I wrong?</p>"}
