Most people don’t know this, but the movie Shaft was based on a novel by one Ernest Tidyman. After the 1971 film was a surprise hit a sequel was inevitable. Tidyman decided to write the next volume about a diamond heist. Sure. Now, the diamond trade is heavily Jewish, so, naturally, he called the book Shaft Among the Jews. Apparently the inciting incident is that Shaft mistakes some Hasidic Jews for cowboys because of their hats and they wind up hiring him to solve a mystery.
