came up from Oceano and Pismo
saw Cayucos. It was nice but there was nothing to do but rent a house. which I would do if I was a surfer. Or a 36 year old married yuppie with our other couple friend and we all make meals from fresh ingredients all want to fuck each other’s spouses but don’t because as a culture we’ve forgotten everything we learned in the ‘70s.
or if you could rent a dog. I would rent the hell out of a dog.
wow there are a lot of RV parks it must be where white people go to die
Pismo Beach is the only ATV beach in California. us white people do like our motorized recreation
about 8 miles north of SLO you can see the split between northern and southern california. the central part actually looks like Texas but more beautiful (Texas looks like California but more voluminous)
OK for a while the 1 was inland and I was all buullllshit but north of SLO through to Carmel holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit
holy shit
also I had a map and was like “Big Sur? with spur roads? that sounds like a big deal, must have cheap motels” especially since the other “towns” I passed were like one building each. But then it was all sooooo expensive yuppie hippie shit, restaurants and B&Bs, and I stopped in this store and asked the Mexicans there whether there were any other cheaper motels ahead they said no only the ones behind
so I turned 22 miles back to Lucia, in the dark. it was probably faster because there were no cars to be behind and I wasn’t distracted by the scenery and didn’t notice to be scared by the fact that I was on the side of a goddamned cliff over the ocean
and Lucia was closed…
22 miles back to Big Sur, with the expectation of another 45 past Carmel to Monterey, and then it turns out 2 or 3 miles past the store were all the cheap hippie motels, one with a bar and a karaoke competition that was actually pretty sweet
lesson being don’t listen to Mexicans
also everywhere was full of German tourists. Are they on Oktoberfest Break or something?
today I changed my oil in a shopping center parking lot in Carmel and I had the best intentions and tried hard but still what a clusterfuck.
here I am in Santa Cruz. I’d wanted to spend more time in college towns and this is nice but not quite the one for me. should’ve spent more time in Santa Barbara. no one minds if you smoke in bars here, which is nice. I don’t smoke tobacco but both my parents did so I enjoy the smell. don’t like the taste though.
actually now that I think of it this is the longest I’ve gone in a town of this size without seeing any cops or presence of authority altogether, and that includes walking past the courthouse. things seem to work though, even though there are sketchy dark trailer nicotine hippies and plenty of homeless people yelling at the air. we can trust each other 'cause we’re all white we’re all white
might go inland to Lodi to learn to skydive while I arrange to meet people in SF
