I'm just curious- I'd find it quite unsurprising.</div>\n<p>Oh, thematically and all it\u2019s very up tumblr\u2019s alley, that\u2019s what I meant by Correct when I called it \u201cCorrect but surprising\u201d. The surprising is that for a long time it was kind of obscure - there was an official English release (with <em>atrocious</em> voice acting) for the first 13 episodes (the \u201cStudent Council Saga\u201d) but it didn\u2019t catch on. And for maybe a decade you could only get the rest of it on fansubbed VHS (this is when I saw it, at the anime club that had originally subbed it). Even when the other arcs got an official licensed release it wasn\u2019t treated as a big thing (iirc the \u201cbig thing\u201d then was\u2026 KareKano? Maybe Excel Saga.)</p>\n<p>So to see it treated now as one of the pillars of \u201990s anime, up there with Evangelion and maybe above Cowboy Bebop, not even to mention Trigun or Escaflowne or Nadesico (which were much bigger at the time), comes as a bit of a shock.</p>"}
