it comes from a lot of sources, honestly? i know for me a lot of it comes from just being basically told, time and time again, a combination of 1. everyone’s opinion is valid and we need to listen to it/debate it earnestly and hear “all sides” and 2. conflict is inherently bad, so some sort of compromise or middle point is obviously the right place to be

which is bullshit of course, but that shit gets wired into your brain pretty hard over the years from media, education, and many other sources besides

acculturation to democratic mythology in which people are the source of legitimacy and equal in this capacity, duh
