Old personality may have been fairly inhibited from acting (I say through gritted teeth, handing that “Act!” anon a win) but in lieu would engage in very extensive planning, understanding theory of how action would be done, etc., so I now I can pretty much step up and walk away with it

As someone who traditionally drew a lot of his power from the way human lives were actually pretty consistent over time and you could learn from appreciating and applying the wisdom and experience of previous generations let me say how weird it is that on turning 40 I’m suddenly hyper-aware of how unlike and in a totally different universe from the younger people out at bars I am but also suddenly far more charming and attractive than I’m calibrated for

Man all the rosebushes – which must have been messes under the previous methhead couple owners’ tenure and then on divorce trimmed back for sale by her dad to these thick stumps that gave off like 3 man-high nightmare canes a year – have finally been developed to the point where they split their spring growth into a candelabra of color that keeps going a while if you deadhead them. Good stuff!

Must be weird to be the guy going hard through my archives and like two days ago was the harrowing cultural crisis of the mid-2010s and now I’m just going on about my yard and how everything is awesome

So uh, the 80-90% and 90-100% bands of iPhone battery charging are twice as wide as the other decades, right? So that just a quick jaunt out only takes you to 85% instead of 75% makes you feel like the battery’s good? Or is it really, not as cover, that much harder to charge the last part?

Something I see underemphasized is that car dealerships give off huge amounts of property, sales, and business taxes and from a public revenue standpoint are essentially money fountains, so keeping dealership owners happy in place is not only clutch for local politicians as political actors, but as the legitimately elected guardians of their particular electorates’ interests

If you see a stretch of road with a bunch of dealerships in a row it is inevitably right on the edge of a jurisdictional border (perhaps a historic pre-annexation one!) and there is a reason they’re all on the same side of it.

Oh, I now realize that 8th case “fatigue doesn’t clear” symptom might be that “post-exertional malaise” they talk about. Fortunately it showed up so late in the game it only really mattered for 3 weeks and then 2 more on the 9th-case echo

Okay spoke too soon, went to a bar on Thursday and the #14 bus (I live in Foster-Powell, I assume even any stalkers who haven’t messaged me Karafuto’s address yet have already picked that up) just didn’t show up when Google Maps told me coming and going so I walked 50 mins total and was a little too worn to go out Friday, even today I’m noticing that it crossed with the blood pressure symptoms and keeping upright and on the move that long so strained my ability to keep the upper body pumped full that standing up is mildly a drag today

Unfortunately, “be gay, do crimes” caught on not because most of the people saying it were criminals, nor even because they were broadly supportive of crime. In fact, most of them weren’t. It’s just because “crime” is a funny word. Thus is the fate of all radical politics.

I feel like a lot of people don’t quite get what a butler is. The role tends to get rounded off to ‘male servant’ pretty regularly in some media, whereas actually butlers are typically not just servants but chief servants. The butler was generally in charge of either all male servants or just all servants, period, in the household of an aristocrat or other very wealthy person. This meant that butlers have often been fairly powerful and influential people, and sometimes even had a manservant or two of their own.

(Also, fun fact: Mary Roberts Rinehart, the early 20th century mystery writer who is widely credited with popularizing the whole ‘the butler did it’ trope was nearly murdered by one of her own servants, a chef whom she had passed over for promotion to butler. He came at her with a pistol, but it jammed, allowing her chauffeur time to wrestle it away and restrain him.)

You didn’t answer the key question things brings up: did she popularize the trope before or after the would-be butler tried to kill her?

according to wikipedia, before

There’s something glorious about the fact that the author who popularised “the butler did it” had a servant who a) failed to become the butler and then b) failed to do it.

If he’d been butler material, he’d have finished the job.

Definitely some small businesses and probably even a few small property owners over the last few years who’ve put a good deal of time and energy into making a go of things along the main drag here as the neighborhood comes up before bowing out whose efforts ultimately went not towards producing wealth or social influence for themselves but, by lifting up the neighborhood in general, for the larger property owners, developers, and realtors of the area.

raginrayguns:

i’ve read two Philip K Dick novels, both of which involved the Earth being gradually abandoned as it becomes uninhabitable, in one of them because of radioactive dust, in the other because of global warming. Recently I started on a book of his short stories, and a lot of them involve people living in the aftermath of apocalyptic wars. It seems similar, but neither of the novels involve wars. The radioactive dust in “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” was unexplained iirc, whereas one of the short stories I read had the world becoming uninhabitable due to radioactive fallout from a nuclear war. Anyway, more of a fixation than id realized, though idk exactly a fixation on what

Dick’s mind is really in the period from the end of WWII to the consolidation of the Cold War in the ‘50s, I’d say it’s a projection of the pre-ICBM fear of nuclear war as the inevitable third step of progression in World War strategic bombing which would finish off the entire old European system of civilization
