By #hoffshots : Trying to capture a scene when flying by at 500 mph isn’t always easy. But sometime the skies open up, the routing is perfect, and it all comes together. This was one of those times flying by mount rainier with the elusive cap cloud perched on top.
My love of linguistics first emerged when I was a profoundly mentally ill and unmedicated 15-year-old and I read a biography of J.R.R. Tolkien and learned that poring over reams of minute data, finding patterns in the data, ascribing outsized importance to those patterns, and trying to convince other people to see them is a branch of science you can go to school for
One of these days I’m gonna go back and finish my degree and when I do that I’m gonna find an artist to make me a fake diploma that says “Professional Pattern Noticer”
So thanks to its Progressive Era western state heritage, Oregon has particularly strict and toothsome balanced budget requirements.
Oregon also has a decade-old Democratic legislative lock, teetering on supermajority. But Oregon also has a two-thirds state Senate quorum requirement, which means that a coordinated mere third of the body can go truant and render the body null – not quite an exploding Diet (the case there was a failed vote voided the entire legislative session, including matters already passed), but close.
And the Republicans have so coordinated; they may lack leverage under regular order, but thus they have established that Oregon can legislate – and budget – on terms acceptable to the Republican Party or not at all.
There’s those toothsome requirements though, it seems state operations would not continue even to the degree federal ones do under “shutdown”, the state might be closer to a federal post-“fiscal cliff”; the reference point I think of is when in the 90s the Portland school district ran out of money one year and the school year just ended a few months early
Love how productive this personality is, just saw something on the way back from getting milk in the kitchen that I had intended to address eventually and in passing figured out what to do with it and just did it
Okay, distributed some but not all of that mulch. At the landscaping yard I couldn’t really figure what the different grades were for but now I realize that my “medium” suits flowerbeds but I should fill those first and if it runs out get “rough” for around trees that’ll take longer to break down.
Also tore out this white clover in the lower backyard that I hadn’t even expected to get to this year, just pinch off flowers when they appeared to keep it from setting more seeds.
I like how much of English mythology is The Great National Hero Gets Cucked
I’d call Arthurian myth more Brittonic than English. In fact I’m pretty sure the myths originated in Wales
I’m American, we’ll formally acknowledge there’s something more to British civilization than England, but we think it’s fundamentally silly when someone acts like it matters.
“Why is he Miles Morales when that’s his mom’s last name?”
Because the Peter Parker-like alliteration and the non-whitebread “Morales” make it clear from the name alone this wasn’t another Ben Reilly, but growing up Black in NYC in the crack era was a more interesting background for his cop dad.
Okay I think whatever “post-exertional malaise” from pitching the mulch last night has worn off, my shoulder’s just sore, because acting as a farmhand is serious work and I’m not used to that motion yet, like it took me a while to get used to swinging the maul.
I’ve got a short pitching shovel, so today I tried keeping my left hand choked up below the scoop and that helped.
Huh, last week I had had mild memory and mental issues and even anosmia in a way that would normally make me suspect Covid echoes, but the 9th case had been too recent.
But since then I have classic finger clumsiness and my iron hunger went from a little under to a little over 3 pills twice daily, so imma call it.
I mean I suppose echo waves could represent some rallying of virus residual in the body, though my first two definitely followed the acute symptoms of my 2nd and 3rd infections.
This might even be why going down from 5 to 4 scoops took 2-4 weeks longer than I expected, which goes to show how faint the echoes are there now.
