Like, I kind of felt like a dilettante, but in retrospect going to Spaceland or The Echo at least once a week I was more exposed to that stuff than 99.9% of America.
Great Northern, The Like, and Giant Drag are the real standouts I remember. I saw The Submarines for a monthly Spaceland residency once and came back again the next week but they ended up about properly rated.
The monthly residencies were pretty much as big as you could get there, play once a week as a showcase for A&R reps or – really growing key at that point – people who might put it in commercials or CW shows (which for music somehow went through your publisher?)

You know it’s kind of weird in The Boondocks that Tom DuBois and Grandpa live across the street from each other, given that Tom seems like he’d move to a “best schools” “favored quarter” suburb while Grandpa would not maximize cost of living. I suppose Grandpa could be doing it for the kids or Tom could merely be living in the best available neighborhood somewhere with better opportunities as a prosecutor, but in either case it’s unclear what Uncle Ruckus is doing there
Anyway the thing behind Tom DuBois, just like with Pierre Delacroix in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled (2000) was that black Americans with French names were likely descended from Caribbean immigrants who had occupied relatively privileged positions in their French colonial homelands, as contrasted with the Dixie slaves-turned-sharecroppers that most Blacks traced their ancestry to
(It was a point that “Delacroix” was an affectation in the direction of this tendency)
So texting my father he now only responds occasionally and in such generalized-back terms I’m pretty sure next time I see him in person I’ll be shocked to realize how far his mind’s gone.

One thing Ghosts of Tsushima was good at dramatizing is that SE Asia is full of severe mountains going straight into the ocean, far more so than the west coast of the US which is itself far younger and more severe than the heavily eroded Appalachians of the East Coast
Like I cannot emphasize enough how much my historical sense turns on home architecture. Like, living in Philly-farm Pennsylvania you would basically see examples from the whole stretch back to colonial days driving around, by 8th grade I was proud of my ability to identify any local house’s date of construction by decade (back to the 1910s, and at least half-century before that), I honestly don’t know how I picked that up, I didn’t specifically study it until college (the influence of Cornell’s Architecture School – uniquely, 5-year undergrad and honestly kinda designy vs. just habitable buildings – did shine through, just like how the Human Ecology [formerly “Home Ec”] college also supported women’s and especially fashion history, technically part of the SUNY system had strong historical backing from their textiles program which had long ago left home production to be a Manhattan garment industry feeder)
Anyway I’ve realized that the broader multi-neighborhood area I’m now in very strongly evokes feelings of the parts of my hometown that were built between the 1950s and the 1970s and this is basically like a geomancer suddenly realizing he lives in the exact kind of terrain he specializes in
