Huh. Hearing that the “antivirals” they give the immunosuppressed re:Covid work by inducing genetic mutation, and while this usually results in non-viable virus code (that’s the mechanism, after all) some fraction is highly mutated but still viable, some fraction of that fraction is in fact more viable than the parent strain, and applied across a whole-humanity disease that already has such a high “R” of new infections seeded per established case the effect is to accelerate its evolution
As I must’ve mentioned before, my thermostat must be in the walls measuring temperature that’s reactive to outdoor conditions as much as if not more than indoor, perhaps down by the high-thermal-mass foundation walls, because the felt heat setting set to the same temp will vary from a few degrees too hot to a few too cold over the course of a day, yet the precise timing of this vacillation will change from day to day in ways that must somehow relate to the weather.
Anyway yesterday was the only time I’ve felt it smoothly comfortable from afternoon to morn, which must somehow have to do with the crazy wind.
So one thing that’s apparently controlled by anxiety, because I don’t feel it at all anymore, is the urge to correct someone being wrong on the internet
This cowboy from Fallout New Vegas is an important and powerful totem in my life personally. I think he should be added to that one collection of Tumblr quotes as “litany against feeling the need to justify your past actions”
This but before 2020 I was literally a different person, but I’m physically incapable of feeling bad about any of that anyway
I simply cannot see how this Supreme Court upholds anything California is claiming to do to be a “refuge” from red states re: abortion and trans kids as consistent with the Full Faith and Credit Clause, long-arm doctrine, or hell, the Interstate Compact Clause
I know homes are expensive these days but aren't you supposed to be rich "gentry"? What do you need to pinch pennies for?
Our “dynastic wealth” doesn’t come from a single windfall but from spending less than we take in every year since the Depression. Plus my father pivoting to real estate as our hometown developed. (As a student I thought of the school board he worked with as about like, about institutional education somehow. Wrong. The role of a “favored quarter” school district is ultimately about local real estate.)
Though he still does legal work. He’s basically an estate planner these days for all the clients who similarly came up in the development of our area. So all that’s getting passed on in trusts he’s in charge of structuring.
So if he’s finally gonna give me a project without trying to micromanage, probably in the best interest of my long-term flexibility as heir to said dynastic wealth if I demonstrate that I know what I’m doing with property.
My furnace only turns off between runs about an eighth as long as the runs themselves.
Between this and that 110s-level heat wave the last year, I am definitely getting my walls (and the roof) insulated when I have them opened. Fuckin’ globally warmed-ass weather.
It’s more that my house is old and the previous owner was not that good at DIY fixes, but yes the weather is causing a list of future remodels that will focus on insulation. New siding, doors, roof, etc. Rent would’ve been cheaper*!
*ymmw
It was kinda a “worst house in the best location” thing where I went into it knowing a lot of stuff would need work but it’d be livable in the meantime and I could get exactly what I wanted for the lowest total price in the end. Tons of halfass “handyman” work here, too.
Some freezing rain expected soon, so guess it’s a good thing I trimmed all those trees down below design weight with a minimum of branches to get iced (and that the neighbors’ tree already fell into my yard two years ago)
And christ, the wind is nuts; there’s def. going to be some branches coming down around town when they start to ice up. Well, in case the power goes out good thing I’ve got a bunch of good blankets.
Especially glad I took off all the ones directly overhanging the roof in manageable chunks (bc if my needs start to outgrow the house with time I was gonna have a gambrel or mansard roofline put on and finish the attic, and if I left it there it’d just keep wasting chunks of the spring growth-from-reserves on stuff that’ll get cut off eventually)

Raise your hand if you have a very visceral understanding of why people might have gone a bit unhinged in the 1920s after living through a succession of natural, unnatural, political and man-made disasters for several years in rapid succession
