Also part of it is like, the stuff I had been doing for the last decade increasingly isn’t an option. Like when I came “the local pinball scene” was like 30 people who would travel around to bars with 2-4 machines, it was a cool way to basically be introduced to the Portland tradition by a bunch of veterans – a nice broad sample, from an old van-living coot to small business cool dads to Red Fang’s merch guy to kitchen staff to a lawyer to a guy who schmoozed his brewery’s beer into taps to a carpenter to all sorts of misfit weirdos…
But increasingly it’s scores of 20 and 30somethings newly arrived for post-collegiate wheely-chair careers, like not actively offputting but like… they’re Charmed viewers, at best. Don’t even write fanfic. And there’s so many, so the scene fragments around a few huge venues scattered around the metropolitan area…
Also part of it we’re coming back to a phase I was last alive for, so I now have the opportunity (with a fresh new personality!) to engage in an adult world I’d previously only seen from the outside, but also we’re now entering phases of life I’d seen in my parents, so I’m parsing how to process that example, too.
I'm pretty you have at this point declared, within the last year or so, the 20s to be the New 70s, New 80s, and New 90s all at once.
Yeah, a lot of things recur on roughly a 35 year cycle give or take but they don’t happen as a programmatic block, and the give and take varies for each so they don’t synch up the same every time. I expect the coming decade to feature dynamics we last saw in the 70s, dynamics we last saw in the 80s, AND dynamics we last saw in the 90s.
Theory that teenagers are dating so much less now because not only just internet pornography but intimate disclosure means that boys and girls don’t feel as drawn by things to discover about each other

Been thinking this decade is gonna have the same role in the culture cycle as the ‘80s so to figure out what I should do with it I look back at what I should have done then (I was single-digits years old, dude!)
And like… okay, what would have been a good use of time, if you weren’t just having a family and nesting (which was quite '80s!)? What was a good scene?
Like, AV geeks? Okay, there’s an angle, there was stuff opening up there with cable TV, digital media production, the internet…
But like, what media tribe to join? What music to listen to? Rap was too proto-, it was an age of “pop” I promise got better with distance, hair metal? Even The Pixies aren’t til '88.
Movies, uh, it was a good action decade I guess? And as VHS became a thing you could hit up the rental on the reg for stuff from decades back and make your house a revival house. You could be early on really appreciating slasher movies?
Like, I’m trying to think of particularly good stuff, that’s Spielberg’s Golden Age but that’s not a scene, who’s in the Steven Spielberg fandom? Dawson Leery? (I wonder what his take was on Tiny Toon Adventures)
Move to Brooklyn (maybe even the Upper West Side!) and renovate a brownstone? Or like, Athens, Georgia or Austin?
Like even stretching my parameters, I’m having a hard time evoking period things that went anywhere. Like, San Francisco did become a more important and happening place for young people in the '90s, and it had fuck all to do with being a bicycle messenger.
