What’s funny to me is that $3B (for a 5 year contract) isn’t that much in the world of sports. Yes, this is big but it’s not out of line with other sports deals.

Fox got 4 years of the NFC (one of two NFL divisions) for $1.6b in 1993, which was considered significant to firmly establishing itself (first year 1987) as a mature network, although that (and picking up John Madden) were to a degree most significant in terms not of viewership capture but entertainment industry signaling that FOX had committed backing.

anyway blackout poetry not just as an art form, but as an act of violence against other works of art

taking a piece of text that someone probably put their heart and soul into creating and using it as your raw material, cutting out everything that you deem irrelevant to the point you want to make

i mean imagine cutting up a painting and using it to make a collage, or taking a marble sculpture and carving pieces out of it to make a different sculpture

just to be clear: i love blackout poetry, im not criticizing it here. i am just waxing poetic about it. i dont really know where im going with this i just have Thoughts about art being destructive

You can always tell when misinformation is from TikTok. It’s genetically distinct from other internet misinformation. It always has the vibe of “some very online people having an argument where they had to take a real source and stretch their interpretations like two dogs fighting over a side of pulled pork”

Tumblr misinformation is just “OP literally made up an entire 13th century papal state that doesn’t exist”

Twitter misinformation is “simple but deeply revealing misconception of reality stated with the confidence of 10,000 suns.” A la “women are inherently bourgeois”

Facebook misinfo is your good old fashioned salt of the earth working class “your grandma repeating shit she heard on Fox news”

@freshgarlicbread thank you for asking 👍

i think the eras of [tumblr] are fairly vague but can pretty much be defined as:

  1. 2007–2010 [tumblr]; a mostly unused site. boring.
  2. 2010–2014 [tumblr]; fourth biggest social media platform in the world. fandom vs hipster. denny’s. mostly high school/college aged users. most like modern tiktok.
  3. 2014–2018 [tumblr]; yahoo acquisition and dashcon killed new user intake. everything became cringe, the vibe changed drastically. most like modern twitter.
  4. 2018–2022 [tumblr]; porn ban happened. roughly half the userbase vanished overnight. suddenly a much more insular community of late-20 somethings. most like modern… google plus?
  5. 2022–2026 [tumblr]; present day. wordpress started making rapid changes, the porn ban was relaxed, twitter migration started to some extent. life is happy.
  6. 2026–2030 [tumblr]; posts removed in favour of tumblr live, no real moderation (outlawing of machine learning), site becomes almost all pornography and shock videos. most like modern 4chan.
  7. 2030– [tumblr]; final act of president jess biden is to take the site offline after the string of assassinations it caused. users migrate to tin can on a string dot gov. most like an episode of seinfeld

Been contemplating my mortality lately but with the anxiety-zeroing I have no fear of death and if I start to worry about physical decay I remind myself that I have direct experience of motor and mental collapse and it’s not really that bad, but the finitude of it all still bugs me – the idea that I might only have as much more life experience ahead of me as I already do behind is devastating, even if the fact that’s because it will be followed by eternal oblivion is just a footnote.

So, in a few years’ time the length of my life since graduating college will be equal to the length up to that point.

And you only have to fudge a little to the dividing line being the personality change, which makes them work as two distinct chapters in life.

And now that I’m all perfected I get another one and a half such chapters of viable life.

And then hopefully a half chapter where I’m still mentally together enough to sit in a sunlit room playing SNES JRPGs.

And I’ve been here, on [tumblr], for about half this chapter, so I have it in me to do that again about three more times in my life.

Huh!

I mean by age my dad’s at the end of the equivalent second further chapter and he’s still working so maybe four more times. He is noticeably less on the ball but hell I was only half-here for 2021 and I got by.

One thing I have come to appreciate is that for a county lawyer like him – and he might be last of a dead breed, starting practice in the ‘60s under an old-school system that was not too rusty when exurban development poured new life into it in the '80s – lawyering wasn’t all that much about brilliant mastery of the law (thorough, maybe) as in balancing the interests of local power centers as a sort of contractor courtier. He (and through him the firm-clan) would hire out to the school district, and the beer distributor, and the Cold-Eeze guys, and various land-owning widows, etc., etc. and like, would attend to their interests, which included like filings and suits at the courthouse, but more broadly minding the acts of every other actor in their various spheres of interest, at least any so substantial they involved their own involvement with the court (and thus, the reasonably tightly-knit legal community)

And so really, performing the role doesn’t demand mental sharpness so much as continuing to exist as the same actor in the reputational system, so it really is one you can ride into the ground I guess.

So, in a few years' time the length of my life since graduating college will be equal to the length up to that point. And you...
