Got my first delivery of a Japanese meal-delivery box. It’s one a month containing 2-4 meals, and now I’m no longer worried that it seemed per-box pricey, it’s not daily eats it’s like restaurant quality that is merely competitive with coastal city app delivery from places and for dishes that’ve already proven themselves, but as an occasional “hey try this!” mailed across the country it’s fair & correct. Having the richest miso soup I’ve ever tasted rn.

On the other hand getting a transparent, vacuum-sealed envelope of precooked, just-reheat-in-the-microwave rice in a temperature-controlled bag is weird

me: when you finish getting thin you should hire a photographer for a cheesecake photo shoot to show off to your friends

also me: but that costs money

me: you’re rich

also me: but to make that happen I’d have to talk to people

me: you don’t have social anxiety anymore

also me: holy shit, I should get cheesecake photos done

Ok did a bunch more weeding in the lower backyard – gonna eliminate my lowest-ranking grass this year, a big rough creeping beachgrass I only let survive into this year to consolidate a pile of bamboo rhizomes and it’s time for succession to the next species, baby.

There’s a tough clover down there I’ll take out outliers, edge back its one main patch, maybe even get all of it this year but not before it sets seed, so really 3 more years of cleaning it up as the very last untamed wilderness around here.

Smashed up more Blueberry Hill, the 2 sections I thought were just 2 more smashing sessions deep each might be 3, got 1 of 6 done.

Finding I’m better at bending down to the ground now, doesn’t sting the waist so much but I feel it in the inner thighs now, I think I might be lowering myself by bowing my knees out, umpire-style

Used my new tamper (less area on the head, which I first thought inferior but now realizes it stamps down with more force per square inch) to pound some new dirt into where I’m tamping the side yard into a rammed-earth ramp up to the backyard gate

Lugged some stones down to mark off a flower patch fed by two ditches at the base of Strawberry Ridge where the ramp goes up from the woodchip path

a remote work site made the brilliant decision to hook their automated ad account — which responds to any tweet that mentions remote work and remote jobs — up to gpt-3

the result is people pioneering new forms of attack in real time

I do like how the threat against the president is also still about remote work.

So, a thing about Instagram is that it is, in fact, the official networking app of yuppie creatives. Go to a gallery opening and no one is asking you for your phone number or, heaven forbid, for your Facebook profile in order to get in touch with you. The messaging side of it does get used.

But that possibly useful contact you met at the gallery opening isn’t going to DM you if they never think about you, right? (You’re not actually “friends” after that guarded, surface-level three-minute conversation, just pretending to be by mutual agreement.) Which I assume is the logic behind why every single real-person Instagram post I see seems calibrated to achieve one specific effect: to remind you that the poster exists.

And this is what I mean by people acting like Brands, because this is the very essence of what Brands do. It’s the entire purpose of advertising. It’s the colonisation of mental real estate as, like, an end in itself. Just get people to think about you and maybe associate you with a few key positive adjectives and it’ll pay off later.

That’s what makes Instagram so distinct and horrible to me. People post on Tumblr for unrestrained fun and for the love of the Discourse; on Facebook to scream their incommunicable pain and terror out to an uncaring universe; on Twitter to engage in pulse-pounding gladiatorial combat… and on Instagram to advertise. That last one isn’t something people should be doing in their general capacity as human beings. I don’t like looking at it.

This got elevated to tablet background for inscrutable reasons, so it deserves a reblog - I think its the Death in Midsummer that really gets me, it goes from generic emo-weeb-waif to this fucker knows, man. They’ve seen the other side of their own despondent vibe, they are all-in and aren’t coming back.

By tablet, I, of course, mean my work tablet I bring to the office.
