There were two recurring themes some editor at Salon – around say ‘96 when it and Slate kind of were for-internet print media – was fixated on.

One was a child-liberationist one, like “parents can have people abduct their 'problem children’ to offshore reform camps like Tranquility Bay, and also often backwater areas of various states use 'Person In Need of Supervision’ structures to apply the state to control teens on parents’ behalf AND THAT’S FUCKED UP”

And it was honestly surprising to me it was the second one the culture ended up picking up as a major subplot.

There’s a U-Haul rental places a bit down on the artery parallel to my street such that it’s pretty natural if you’re going there but not familiar with the neighborhood to turn and assess things in front of my house, and I wish I could say talking with the drivers has given me some insight into in- and outmigration trends from Portland, but it mostly just leaves me with a good mental map of storage places and other U-Hauls in the area.

A reasonable case! Like the ‘80s and '90s were all hyperventilating like “what if COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES were the gods of a new pagan polytheism!?!” but the funny thing is the MCU is how a polytheist mythology would have to look in a mass culture unmediated by Classical elite rule, all painted in the broadest strokes for the broadest possible audience, subtle quality touches – even WITHIN the canon – largely unappreciated, and the richer takes on the subject once appreciated by a narrow elite washed out by lowest common denominator popularizations.
