I think another funny Mormon thing is that the largest non-LDS sect of Mormonism is called Community of Christ and originated during the succession dispute after Joseph Smith’s death with Brigham Young and his followers setting up the LDS church and Joseph Smith III (the son of Joseph Smith if you couldn’t tell) setting up the Community of Christ and the CoC are pretty different and from what I’ve seen are basically like progressive liberal Protestants but with the Book of Mormon like they have female clergy and support LGBT rights etc (also they’re Trinitarians in the normal Christian sense) but also until 1996 their Prophet-President had always been a direct descendent of Joseph Smith and I think it’s kinda funny how the sect whose leadership was traditionally treated as like a hereditary theocratic monarchy is basically the liberal branch of Mormonism

AIs being able to convincingly pretend to know things isn’t a sign of intelligence. Come back when we have an AI that can convincingly pretend to be unaware of things that are common knowledge for the sake of a bit.

(I’m 100% not joking. A system that a. knows what it knows; b. is able to make educated guesses about what I know; c. is able to use this information to identify what I think I know it knows; and d. proceeds to pretend not to know something I think I know it knows for the express purpose of fucking with me would would require a relatively sophisticated theory of mind, and I’m prepared to grant that anything that could do all that is probably engaging in something like thought.)

Alright, so some good smashing on Blueberry Hill today – there was a part I only expected to be able to blunt smash tangled branches but you could really bite the sharp head into it and then blunt-smash on the second pass, leaving it a lot more consolidated. Unfortunately, I think this realization and the one that there’s no good stable ground AT ALL to get another bit means there’s at least 5 up to 9 sessions left.

asymmetrical marriage: where you are married to someone, but they aren’t married to you. I can think of no advantage to this relationship structure but it is another way to rebel against tradition.

It’s actually kinda neat that 2 of America’s seasonal festivals (Thanksgiving/fall and Independence Day/summer) are coded nationalistically and the other 2 (Christmas/winter and Easter/spring) religious

You would be the first to admit that Big Capitalism is not America’s religion, but it is a dominant force in the country. And I think Christmas is more capitalist than it is religion. So 2/1/1

Yeah, the draining religious content is an interesting synecdoche for the national culture here (Pilgrims giving thanks used to bear religious overtones!)

Now Easter’s the tougher case, that’s still more religious-coded as religiosity declines, we worked up the bunny, eggs, and candy baskets to give it some secular content but that’s not really thick enough to bear weight on its own, in my childhood you might dress “up” for church and then go to a nice lunch with your extended family (in town, this wasn’t a holiday you traveled for – actually that itself is an interesting distinction, you’d travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas but not Easter or the 4th [though summer holiday road-tripping was a thing]), but that was kind of the small-town “Sunday best” model the previous generation had experienced every week
