sure, the stuff that comes out about the empire and space marines is clear that they are cruel and violent. but they are cruel and violent and right. but they’re also very very big on the heroism of the space marines, the glorious power of the god-emperor, how real the threat of chaos is. chaos as it exists in warhammer 40k is basically the fantasy of the fascist made reality–a creeping, ever-infiltrating, ontologically evil force that will take root and destroy everything if perfect purity and control are maintained for even a second. like, yes, the empire is very clearly fascist, but they exist in a setting in which fascist propaganda is fundamentally true. fascists are able to see themselves in the empire because empire is, again and again, justified and vindicated by 40k’s writing.
and tbh this was barely better in the early days, as much as people like to cry 'well it was meant to be satire’, but at least the empire used to be also extremely fucking textually useless and incompetent to the point where they were doing more harm than good. but over the years this has entirely given way to the hypercompetent Tough Men Doing What Needs Doing space marine wank that makes up 99% of 40k output nowadays
Honestly I even think ‘a universe where the premises of fascist mythology are true’ isn’t, like, an impossible conceit to do something interesting and worthwhile with. But 'and our protagonists are the literal spartinate unbermensch action heroes’ does kind of close off like 99.99% of them.

In Star Trek Generations, the bad guys had a substance which could stop the fusion inside a star, making it collapse and produce a solar-system-obliterating shockwave. This is actually somewhat feasible compared to your average Star Trek science: for various reasons I don’t think it could actually exist in the way it does in the movie, but you could conceive of a substance that acted as “fusion poison”, producing more of itself when it collided with energetic hydrogen but was not itself able to be fused further. Even the bit about the shockwave was really plausible: it’s pretty much exactly what happens in an actual core collapse supernova.
The one really unfeasible part was that it couldn’t happen instantaneously like it did in the movie. Even in the core of starts, most hydrogen atom collisions don’t result in fusion - they can’t overcome the Coulomb barrier. If you introduced a self-replicating fusion poison into the core of the Sun, it would grow only very slowly, at least at first. You could imagine a fusion poison produced almost no notable effects for centuries or millennia, then maybe a one-lifetime period of noticeable effects, then the Sun went out and everyone died.
Which I actually think would be a better story. Suppose you knew that there was a fusion poison, but not exactly when the Sun would collapse, since astrophysical time scales are immense and imprecise. It’s going to be in the next 10,000 years, but beyond that you’re not certain. Would people try to escape the Solar System? What would life be look in an era of certain doom but highly-uncertain timing?
My job is to sell sewing machines. We basically sell two lines (“brands”, though the same company runs both names). One is the $150-$400 range, and one is the $600-$18,000 range. There’s a little bit of overlap with one low-range machine being almost $500 and two high-range machines being just under $550, but mostly there’s the low line and the premier line.
People often come in with an expectation of what a sewing machine should do, and how much it should cost. It is not uncommon for those expectations to be incongruous with reality. Low-priced machines usually don’t have the features that people who sew want their machine to have. The people who control stocking in my company have decided to largely have our budget line be machines that will meet people’s expectations of features, even if that means all out models are out of the expected price range. We don’t have a machine that’s as cheap as you want, but we do have a machine that’s as good as you expect it to be.
People are often surprised that our least-expensive machines are still over $150. However, I happen to have a sewing machine collection that includes several machines under $150, so I thought for funsies sake we could take a dive into my collection, as I talk about exactly how stripped-down the features can get on a sewing machine.
