The SPLC is a direct-mail fundraising operation and operates on the same basis as right-wing direct-mail operations: they send out mailings to old people with more money than sense hyping up the new IMMINENT THREAT TO YOU, YOUR KIND, AND EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY IN THIS WORLD, imply that they are the only thing holding this back, and then solicit money the overwhelming majority of which goes to executive salaries and future solicitation programs.

Like right-wing mailers, the nominal subjects of their ire are chosen more on the basis of what will scare money out of their mailing lists than any actual ideology or plan of action. The chief difference lies in what idiom their respective audiences respond to.
